Weekly Treasures

What a fantastic response I had to the Sonority Sisterhood post last week. It was so lovely to meet so many new sisters and pay a visit to all your blogs. Thank you all for leaving such lovely comments and I'm looking forward to our next get-together.

Now, once again I'm joining in with Rhoda at Southern Hospitality for her weekly Thrifty Treasures party.

I bought a few things at Sunday's car boot sale. One was a set of six heavy-duty wheels (another buyer told me they were wheels for shop cabinets). I have ambitions of building a pull-truck out of some old sheets of wood I have, to help transport bags of compost etc. around the garden. (I say 'ambitions' because...well, don't hold your breath.)

But you don't want to see those, do you? Oh, OK:

The star buy was this Singer sewing machine table, already painted and with a wonderful piece of wood on top:

It's not in working order of course and I got it for £20 which I was very pleased about:

I originally had plans of using it in the garden for plant display, but I can't possibly leave that wood to the elements so it's come indoors and into the 'breakfast room'.

The other treasure I picked up, and for a mere £2, was this pretty firescreen:

Beautiful embroidery but as you may be able to see, lots of water stains:

So I want to ask your advice on 1) getting the embroidery out of the screen (it looks like it's sealed in) and 2) how do I get the stains out? Or is that the reason such a treasure was so cheap? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Have a great week,

Blessings,

Andi xx

Hope you can get the embroidery out to clean it, sorry I don't have any tips...

  3. As far as the water stain goes, no advice other than to get out kids' crayons and just color over the stains, making a blue background color behind the embroidery. It will look like it was MEANT to be that way!

  11. hiya- if this doesn't work for you then I shall just pretend that I never said it...

...the last vintage embroidery I had with water stains I simply sprayed with Vanish stain remover and put on a cool setting in the washing machine.
The embroidery colours didn't run, and the stains came out no problem- I expect they've been caused by condensation behind the glass?

Keeping fingers crossed throughout the cycle is an optional extra!

Other than that, you could always set about creating a new embroidery- or embellishing the original?

  13. What about Vanish and a delicate handwash - I have ehard of people who have put old fabrics inb the washer only to see them fall apart in front of their eyes - at least in the sink you can take immediate action if necessary!

  15. Hi, Andi!
    So nice to meet you!
Thank you for coming by my house!
I have gotten water stains out of fabric--here's basically how I did it, go to this site, it will help: (http://www.ehow.com/how_4811098_remove-water-stains-fabric.html)
I have a "Davis" sewing table on my deck, with a glass top-- Yours is much prettier than mine since it hasn't seen the elements yet :)
My daughters love all things British--Dr. Who is their favourite show, and we have to have tea every day--sometimes with scones :)
They have a matching set of T-shirts with the Union Jack on them!
I am your new friend so I (and they) can see what you'll be up to!
Hugs and blessings to you as you make your home!

  17. This is such a pretty piece of embroidery!! I am hoping you figured out how to get it out of the frame and clean it- It would be a shame to not be able to use this! I have a little faux fireplace that this would look adorable in front of! Lucky you!
